This past week, I brought in my car to Guan's for a routine oil change and was told that I needed to replace the spark plugs and rear brakes. I agreed but when I went to pick up the car it was leaking coolant from the engine on my drive home. I immediately called him as I pulled into my garage (I live 2 blocks from the garage). Because the coolant had completely drained, I brought the car back. At this point, Derek told me that the water pump was now broken and that this was a complete coincidence.
He then charged me an additional $900 for fix the water pump on top of the $1300 I had already paid.
I spoke with two other local mechanics who said this was an implausible story and that the water pump and spark plugs are in close proximity to one another on the engine block and that it is easy to damage the water pump when working on the spark plugs.
I would have even swallowed having to pay for the water pump repair had Guan simply acknowledged that it had happened on his watch as an inadvertent error. However, his lack of acknowledgement and insistence that this was a complete coincidence was maddening and unprofessional.
There are at least three other garages (Harbord Auto; Crawford Auto; Peter's Garage) within a 10-block radius of Guan's, which I have used in the past. I would unequivocally recommend them over Guan's.
