Salons can be hyper-gendered spaces, and as someone whose style is a bit more "out there," I've always struggled to find a stylist who understood what I wanted in a salon that made me feel at ease.

Enter Coupe Bizzarre! Operated by Jimi (stylist) and Robert (colourist), Coupe has been in existence since 1995 on Queen West. Now, it exists as Mini Coupe in a private basement and it's exactly the style haven I've dreamt of.

Despite what you might think of a basement salon, Coupe is decorated with more zest and style than any street level salon I've visited. Personally, being on the space not only makes me feel at home, it makes me feel cheery! If you like electronic music, Coupe always had an amazing soundtrack, thanks to Robert's days as a DJ.

As for Jimi, he is a total dream. He's always excited about whatever look you're going for, edgy or not. And if you want something distinct, he's very skilled at making sure you get a unique look.

In terms of pricing, it's not gender-based and all cuts are $65, lasting about an hour. Appointments can all be made online and if you're a student, Coupe's website advertises a discount.

One final note is accessibility. As far as I know, Coupe can only be accessed by a narrow set of stairs. This means if you have different mobility needs, you may want to call ahead.

Otherwise, if you're looking for a style haven that puts you in a great mood and your hair in very capable hands, give Mini Coupe a try!
